Jones Nuttall, 14 Hurcos and still growing

North-West based Jones Nuttall Precision Engineering Ltd is truely a one-stop shop. They describe their service as a "Total Sub-Contract Solution Under One Roof".

It is easy enough to make such a claim, but when the full capabilities of a business like Jones Nuttall are laid out, it is clear that this impressive operation is able to offer the most comprehensive service possible.

Jones Nuttall is a prestigious subcontract manufacturer with more than 60 employees that supply more than 30,000 different components to over 250 clients every year. This client list includes recognised names such as the London Underground, Network Rail, the Linde Group, ScotRail, Bombardier and countless others in the rail, energy, petrochemical, MOD and oil and gas sectors.

Precision CNC machining forms a large part of their versatile offering with 14 CNC Hurco machines, ranging from 3 axis VM range machining centres, including 9 recent VM30i machines with Max5 controls, through turning centres and the latest addition, a Hurco DCX22i to further increase capacity for larger work. The DCX22i, 40 taper machine with 40 toolchanger stations and 12,000RPM spindle, provides machining capacity of up to 2.2m by 1.6m. Jones Nuttall are often asked to take on larger and more complex work. Investment in extra in-house capacity is the best method of satisfying customer demand, whilst meeting expectations for quality and speed of turnaround.

Of the Hurco machines, Geoff Brown, a machine operator at Jones Nuttall says “They are so user-friendly. Easy to programme and easy to set-up and use. The twin-screen Max5 control really helps, as I can programme and edit on one screen, whilst the other screen displays the component and toolpath. Programming of all the Hurco machines is the same. An operator will often run 2 or 3 machines at a time”

Producing everything from 1-offs and small batches up to runs of 1000+ from a diverse range of materials, including inconel, nylon, titanium, plus steel and aluminium, the company utilises everything from solid carbide and indexable tools for turning, milling, drilling and threading. UK manufacturer ITC is the preferred supplier, helping to provide efficiency improvements and reliable supply. The close relationship with ITC has helped reduce cycle times and improve cutter life throughout the business.

Whilst sub-contract precison machining is a Jones Nuttall strength, what sets them apart is the amount of additional work that can be completed on-site. There is a fabrication and welding department with spot, MIG and TIG welding capabilities, plus arc welding machines, punching and guillotine equipment.

The constant changing demands of the railway industry has meant adaption to these requirements and, in order to be fully focused Jones Nuttall formed a separate Railway Engineering Division. This division specialises in repair, overhaul and testing of mechanical/electrical components as well as the manufacture of new components and assemblies to OEM standards and specifications.

Many of the finishing processes are also completed in-house. Shotblasting, powder-coating, painting and varnishing, plus heat treatment and a range of plating, polishing and anodising processes to give each finished component the required properties.

Whatever the industry, if you need something making, not only can Jones Nuttall provide the capacity and machinery to get the parts made, they can also call on years of expertise to provide advice and know-how to make sure that the best materials and processes are utilised.
