HMS Ark Royal was a 22,000-ton aircraft carrier commissioned in 1938 and the most famous Royal Navy carrier of the early war. Based at Gibraltar with Force H, she hunted Graf Spee, fought through the Norwegian campaign, escorted Malta convoys, and most famously launched the Swordfish strike on May 26, 1941 that jammed Bismarck's rudder and sealed her fate. Goebbels' propaganda machine had falsely claimed her sunk repeatedly throughout the early war. Her actual end came on November 13, 1941, while she was returning to Gibraltar from Malta. U-81 under Friedrich Guggenberger fired a single torpedo into her starboard side abreast of the engine room. The hit by itself should not have been fatal. Damage control was slow, counter-flooding was mismanaged, and she listed steadily through the day. She was abandoned and capsized in the early hours of November 14, 1941. Only one crewman was killed. The investigation that followed forced fundamental changes in Royal Navy damage-control doctrine.
