the Minister for the Interior intends to introduce a Community Service Bill to Parliament

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has disclosed that the Minister for the Interior intends to introduce a Community Service Bill to Parliament to allow community service to be imposed as punishment for certain offences instead of imprisonment.

According to him, the move is aimed at reducing prison congestion and reforming offenders rather than exposing them to conditions that could worsen criminal behaviour.

He explained that in some cases, the cost of keeping an offender in prison is higher than the value of the item stolen, noting that the state spends significant resources feeding inmates and maintaining prison supervision.

Mahama Ayariga gave an example of a young person who steals a file and is sentenced to prison for one or two years, arguing that instead of being reformed, some offenders return from prison more hardened because of prison conditions. #ourdemocracynews #parliamentgh #ghananews #youthempowerment #ghanafootball #npp #accountability #parliament #ParliamentGH #MahamaAyariga #CommunityServiceBill #GhanaPolitics #tiktokghana #kofiadams #ourdemocracynews #youtubeshorts #ghananewstv #ourdemocracynews #parliamentgh #ghananews #youthempowerment #ghanafootball #npp #accountability #parliament #kofiadams
