She Wrote the First Novel by a Black Woman to Sell a Million Copies — Then History Forgot Her

She grew up watching everyone who walked through her family’s pharmacy in Connecticut. She never stopped watching. She moved to Harlem in the 1940s and saw everything — the beauty of it and the grinding weight of it. In 1946 she published The Street — a novel about a woman trying to build a decent life against every system working to destroy her. It sold over a million copies. The first novel by a Black woman to do that. The literary world celebrated it and moved on. Ann Petry kept writing — novels, short stories, children’s books — with the same precision and honesty for the rest of her life. Scholars now recognize The Street as a foundational work of American literature. She saw it all first. Without Her is a short-form documentary series honoring the women history forgot to tell us about. 🕯️ What would we have done without her? #WithoutHer #AnnPetry #BlackHistory #WomensHistory #LiteraryHistory #BlackLiterature #ForgottenHistory #HiddenFigures #ConniesRamblings #HistoryShorts #Documentary
