Evolution of a 3rd Metatarsal Foot Fracture

Patient 42 year old male, non-smoker, weight 47kg, height 1.63m
18 May 2019, playing street football with inappropriate footwear
Lost balance and twisted foot in shoe

Pain felt on putting weight on foot, no cuts or abrasions

Presented with swelling and internal bruising the following day

Managed to fly from East London to Johannesburg

Presented at Groenkloof Hospital in Pretoria on 19 May 2019

Diagnosis 3rd metatarsal spiral fracture

Since no improvement after 8 weeks

Patient seeked 3rd opinion from Sports Medicine Physician

Vitamin D-25 = 27ng/mL

Started taking Vitamin-D supplements 1000IU/day

3 treatments of extracorporeal shock wave therapy administered during late July 2019

Also stopped using moonboot continuously and started with running shoes around 5 August 2019 – especially when safe to do so at home

after 26 august No More MoonBoot

Started Physiotherapy sessions – completed five sessions over 3 weeks to strengthen foot

Exercises on foot continued for another 3 weeks

Started with orbital walker in gym and moved to rowing around October 2019

Started Jogging short distances of ~2km per week by start November 2019

Undertook 2 overseas trips during October and November 2019
