Rescuing a flying-fox stuck in a light well: this is Taiwan
Taiwan is a subadult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who got himself stuck in a tiny lightwell courtyard area and was hanging off a hose reel.
This is the second time I've been to this home to rescue a bat in this area; The architectural layout of the adjacent houses gives a pathway along which the bat can fly, which suddenly becomes 2 storeys high and a dead end. There are a lot of local large fruiting native fig trees which attract the bats to the area.
There's realistically nothing which can be done to fix the layout of the buildings which will solve the problem, so I just hope nothing gets caught there again.
It's about 2 years since I was last there rescuing Formosa and her baby Tai. (see the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IJKa0kOQaA&t=73s)
Anyway, Taiwan was rescued today; I dropped him off to a carer on my way home where he was sorted out. He has hit his head, as is usual when bats crash land in light wells, but otherwise is looking fine. He has a few knuckle grazes but they should heal up.
Addit: Taiwan was released about 7 weeks after coming into care, via the release aviary.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
https://tolgabathospital.org/donate/
Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.
