Inside Castle Itter, Austria, France's most famous prisoners awaited execution. Tennis legends. Prime ministers. A general. The SS was coming to kill them all.
Captain John Lee had no orders to intervene. He intervened anyway and handed weapons to the very Wehrmacht soldiers he'd just captured.
For one night, former enemies shared the same walls, the same ammunition, and the same enemy.
The castle held. The SS retreated. Germany surrendered the next morning.
