Why We Shouldn’t Rush Clients to Find Words: The Role of Implicit Memory in EMDR Therapy.

When a client says, “I can feel it, but I can’t find the words,” it can be tempting to help them label their experience — but in EMDR therapy, rushing to language too soon can interrupt the healing process.

In this video, I share a clinical moment from my EMDR practice that illustrates why it’s essential to stay with sensation and implicit memory before moving into words. You’ll learn:

Why implicit and explicit memory systems function differently during reprocessing

How language can shift clients out of their emotional processing networks

Why “the body is the last car on the train” in EMDR

How to help clients stay connected to their body’s wisdom instead of rushing to explanation

This teaching is part of what I emphasize in EMDR Consultation or as I like to refer to it as mentorship — learning to trust the process, tolerate silence, and let the body lead the way.

If you’re an EMDR-trained therapist looking to deepen your understanding of relational EMDR and implicit memory work, this video is for you.
