I used to feel defeated every time I looked at how far our business still had to go.

I used to feel defeated every time I looked at how far our business still had to go.

A coach recently shared something called "the gap and the gain" that completely shifted how I see our painting company's journey. Most of us entrepreneurs are always staring at the horizon - where we want to be versus where we are now. But here's the thing about horizons: no matter how fast you run toward them, they never get closer. Your vision just keeps expanding.

The breakthrough? Learning to also look backward at how far we've come. From Jose running everything solo to having systems, from guessing at estimates to knowing our production rates, from me wanting to quit six times to serving on the Women in Paint committee.

When I only focused on the gap ahead, I felt demoralized. When I celebrate the gains behind us, I feel energized to keep building. Both perspectives matter, but most of us forget to acknowledge our progress.
