Driving Habits that DESTROY Your Car's Suspension (Costly Mistake!)

In this video I am going over driving habits that wreck a car suspension. Your suspension system is one of the most expensive repairs you'll ever face.

You can have a perfectly running engine and a flawless gearbox, but if your suspension is wrecked, you're in for a rough ride, poor control, and a serious safety risk.

Today, we're breaking down the most common and most overlooked ways drivers slowly kill their suspension. These aren't just mistakes. These are habits that creep in and cost you thousands.

Let's get into it. Number 1: Braking while hitting a pothole. You see a pothole, your instincts tell you to hit the brake. But that reaction is doing more harm than good. Here's why: braking shifts your car's weight forward, compressing the front suspension.

So when the wheel slams into the pothole, it doesn't glide, it punches directly into the hole with full force. The impact is harder. wThe damage is deeper. Your shocks, struts, control arms, and even your wheels take the hit. The better move? Slow down before the pothole, then release the brake as you go over it.

Your suspension will float instead of collapse. Number 2: Turning the wheel while the car is still. You're parallel parking or leaving a tight spot. You start turning the wheel before you move. That's dry steering, and it's brutal. When the tires aren't rolling, they grip the ground hard.

Turning the wheel forces your entire steering and suspension system to strain against that resistance. Over time, that wears out your tie rods, steering rack, ball joints, and even your power steering motor if you have one. Solution? Let the car roll just a few inches before turning the wheel. Simple. Safe. Smart.

Number 3: Ignoring Wheel Alignment. This one destroys your suspension quietly, and most drivers don't even check it until the damage is done. Hit a pothole? Clip a curb? Replace your tires? Even drive thousands of miles? All of these can throw off your alignment, even slightly. And slight misalignment wears out your suspension fast. Your tires wear unevenly. Your steering feels off.

Your shocks and joints work overtime just to keep the car going straight. And here's the worst part, most drivers skip alignment unless the car is pulling hard. That's a mistake. You should get a wheel alignment any time you hit a major pothole or curb, when you install new tires, if you notice uneven tire wear, or at least once a year as preventive maintenance. It's a small cost that protects every major suspension component.

Number 4: Attacking steep driveways head-on. Pulling straight into a steep driveway might seem harmless, until you hear that sickening scrape, or worse, bottom out the front end. The sharper the incline, the more your suspension gets compressed all at once. This is especially dangerous in low vehicles or when your car is loaded with passengers or cargo. Instead, approach at an angle. Let one tire climb first. That way, the force is distributed, and your suspension isn't hammered all at once. This simple habit saves your bumper, your struts, and your chassis.
