The real reason for the STM32 shortage

STMicro's automotive-grade STM32s are now sitting at 55-week lead times — and that's not the only problem. A formal price increase took effect on April 26th, hitting the TSX series, automotive-grade families, STM32H7, and STM32U5 hardest. If you're designing with these parts, this is a supply situation you need to understand now.

The root cause goes deeper than demand spikes. Most MCUs are still fabricated on legacy 40, 45, and 90nm nodes, and suppliers never restarted wafer expansion after the 2023 inventory glut. That capacity isn't coming back quickly — meaning engineers and procurement teams need to act strategically, starting with cross-referencing alternate parts on Octopart.
