Putin Slams European Policies, Rejects Zelensky Meeting as 'Boorish' at SPIEF

Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday.

Noting what he called "upheavals shaking energy markets" particularly at present, in the Middle East, he was critical of the "implementation of shortsighted policies by the European bureaucracy."

This, he said, was "accompanied by aggressive rhetoric," leading to a further erosion of Europe’s standing in the global economy.

Putin also dismissed Western criticism that his country's economic engine has stalled.

At the meeting, Putin rejected a proposal by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a face-to-face meeting on the 4-year-old conflict, saying he sees “no point” in it.

He described Zelensky’s open letter proposing the meeting as “boorish.”

Asked about Iran, Putin voiced hope that the cessation of hostilities will last and lead to a deal that would secure lasting peace.
