I started learning music on the guitar and it took me forever before I really tried to understand how my instrument fit into the broader spectrum of music theory. Once I DID everything opened up for me.
If you're a guitar player thinking about diving into the keyboard - know this: It's more important to UNDERSTAND the piano roll than to actually be good at playing it.
