Transforming Ex-Mining Pits Into Productive Aquaculture in Belitung | Berikan Protein Journey

Discover how ex-mining pits in Belitung are being transformed into tilapia farms and further developed into high-protein products like “Mie Pandai” and “Sagoo Crackers.”

This is part of a one-year community empowerment program by Berikan Protein, in collaboration with GoTo and Instellar, to drive a circular economy in Belitung Regency, Indonesia.

Starting from an unlikely place, former mining pits are revitalized into productive tilapia aquaculture ponds, turning degraded land into a source of life and livelihood. Through this approach, the program has successfully empowered local communities, especially women, by creating new income opportunities and strengthening local capacities.

More than just generating economic value, the harvested tilapia is also utilized to support stunting reduction efforts, ensuring children have access to affordable, high-protein nutrition. These products are combined with sago flour, a traditional ingredient from Belitung that is slowly being forgotten, bringing local food heritage back into daily consumption through innovation.

This is more than a program. It is a movement where post-mining land is restored, communities are empowered, and nutrition is improved for a more sustainable future.
