I have never played | Rimworld E01

In RimWorld, I start my very first colony with almost no idea what I'm doing. This is a strategy and colony management game about survival, resource management, base building, and keeping your colonists alive — which immediately becomes more difficult than expected.
After completing the tutorial, I decide the best plan is to follow exactly what RimWorld tells me to do:
build a shelter
plant food
create storage
research technology
and somehow keep everyone alive
Simple. Probably.
Naturally, things start going wrong almost immediately.
One colonist has a breakdown, I'm assigning beds without understanding half the menus, I become obsessed with taming a tortoise, and then a mad duck attacks the colony for reasons known only to RimWorld.
This episode includes:
first colony setup
resource management
food production
research planning
wildlife taming attempts
and me desperately pretending I understand what's happening
Also:
Bono immediately becomes the most important member of the colony
we acquire a tortoise named Atuin
somebody gets stabbed by wildlife
and I discover that surviving the tutorial and surviving RimWorld are apparently two very different skills
If you're a RimWorld veteran, feel free to leave advice in the comments. I know just enough about the game to be dangerous, and that feels like exactly the amount of knowledge RimWorld needs to destroy me.
