Bat-inspired aerial robot for search and rescue

A research team led by Nitin Sanket, faculty in the Department of Robotics Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, demonstrates a version of their bat-inspired aerial robot. The team is developing a robot for search and rescue applications in dark, dusty, and dangerous environments with poor visibility. The lightweight robot relies on echolocation, just like bats, a physical acoustic shield to reduce propellor noise, and an AI-based neural network called Saranga that recovers weak echo signals from very noisy measurements by learning patterns over time.
