Prenatal Testing for Thalassemia Explained | Can You Detect Thalassemia Before Birth? | Dr Liza

Can thalassemia be detected during pregnancy?

In this informative video, Dr. Liza Bulsara, Pediatric Hemato-Oncologist at MOC Baner Pune, explains everything about prenatal testing for thalassemia.

If both parents are thalassemia trait carriers, prenatal diagnosis can help determine whether the unborn baby has thalassemia major, is a carrier (trait), or is normal.

This process involves a multidisciplinary team including a hematologist, fetal medicine specialist, and gynecologist.

Dr. Liza explains the two common testing methods depending on the stage of pregnancy:
Amniocentesis
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)

These tests are performed safely by collecting samples such as amniotic fluid or placental tissue not directly from the baby.

The known gene mutation causing thalassemia is then checked in the sample.

This early diagnosis helps families make informed decisions and plan for the future. If you are a thalassemia trait carrier and planning pregnancy, consult a hematologist early.
