Make Personalized Door Mats with a Cricut! (Freezer Paper + Flex Seal Method!)

Learn how to make a personalized door mat using an inexpensive fiber mat, paint, and a stencil you can cut on your Cricut (Design #150) at https://jennifermaker.com/diy-personalized-door-mats/

I have been waiting ALL winter to show you all how to make these awesome personalized door mats! Now that spring is here and our porches need some love, let’s make these cute and easy doormats using our Cricuts!

MATERIALS LIST (contains my affiliate links):
• Coir door mat at https://amzn.to/2YcIvil (we got ours from Amazon, but you can also get them at Target https://rstyle.me/+XM39xd1lGTx_4PxP4JvtBw , Home Depot, IKEA, and Hobby Lobby)
• Paint (we tried Flex Seal rubber spray https://amzn.to/3022qm3 , flat exterior house paint, and outdoor acrylic paint https://amzn.to/2V8VuQe )
• Stencil material (use freezer paper https://amzn.to/2JFda49 , Oramask stencil vinyl https://amzn.to/2JBiepR or removable vinyl https://amzn.to/2JymzKt)
• (Optional) Stenciling brush (round point) if you're not using a spray paint
• (Optional) Sealer (we tried Flex Seal clear spray https://amzn.to/2WvI0iX , Krylon UV-resistant clear sealer https://amzn.to/2VjEnLM , and spar urethane https://amzn.to/2JxOuug)
• (Optional) Painter's Tape
• A big board about the size of your mat so you can move your mat without messing up your stencil
* A way to cut your stencil (I used the amazing Cricut -- see http://shrsl.com/1dq4w
• My free doormat SVG cut file (Design #150) (available in my free resource library at https://jennifermaker.com/library

The personalization on the mat itself is made by painting the door mat. But the big question is — which paint looks best and lasts the longest? You know how I love to test things, so I tested three different paints! The first is exterior house paint, the second is outdoor acrylic paint, and the third is black Flex Seal, which is actually a spray rubber. I’ll show you which one worked best in this tutorial!

And if you’re anything like me, the biggest question you have is, “How long will the paint on this door mat last and look good?” To test this, I made three identical doormats and each one has all three paints and all three sealers. I’m going to put these outside on my covered porch, which is not entirely exposed to the elements, and let everyone walk on these for a while. We’ll check back on them and see how they’re doing at three, six, and 12 months, and I’ll share photos of them at https://jennifermaker.com/diy-personalized-door-mats/

Step by Step Directions to Paint and Personalize a Door Mat:

STEP 1: FIND OR MAKE YOUR PERSONALIZED DOOR MAT DESIGN
- Download my free SVG file
- Upload it to Cricut Design Space
- Resize or personalize to suit your needs (you can add a new name by clicking the "Text" icon, typing a new name, and choosing a font for it).

STEP 2: CUT OUT YOUR DESIGN ON STENCIL MATERIAL
- Select the right material settings in Design Space
- Put your material on your mat (if you use freezer paper, put it shiny side down)
- Cut out your stencils

STEP 3: APPLY YOUR STENCIL MATERIAL TO YOUR DOOR MAT
- Slide your board under your coir door mat
- Remove the design elements from your stencil
- If you're using vinyl, carefully remove the backing and place it on your mat (it won't stick completely)
- If you're using freezer paper, position it on your mat sticky side down and use an iron (320°F for 10 seconds) to lightly melt the plastic onto the mat (you may also wish to use pins to keep the freezer paper in place)

STEP 4: PAINT YOUR DOOR MAT
- If you're using a brush-on paint, lightly pounce the paint onto the empty areas of the design. Two coats.
- If you're using a spray-on paint, cover the parts of the mat you don't want paint to touch, take your mat to a ventilated area, and spray it while keeping the can directly over your stencil. Two coats.
- Allow your door mat paint to dry at least 24 hours.

STEP 5: SEAL YOUR DOOR MAT
- Keeping your stencil on your mat, apply your sealer with either a brush (for spar urethane) or spray it on (UV resistant sealer or Flex Seal Clear).
- Remove your stencil and enjoy!
