Peaceful Day at the Lake with a P3. CN L539 at Michigamme, MI.

A nice break form the pair of SD60s that had usually been assigned to CN train L539 came in early July 2020 in the form of CN 5651, an SD75i. Most of these units have K3L horns on them, but this one had an interesting P3 that sort of slides into tune when it's sounded. I'm not usually a fan of new cast P3s, but every now and then I'll hear one that I kind of like.

L540/L539 is an as needed (usually twice weekly) local from Ishpeming, MI to L'Anse MI along what's left of the former DSS&A mainline. The trip is long and slow at 10mph with over 75 miles to cover round trip, and a long 3% grade descending into L'Anse. CN sold off all of it's branch lines in the Upper Peninsula to WATCO recently as part of implementing PSR on it's American Network. Well, almost all of them. This lonely branchline still remains in CN possession, and it will likely stay that way for the foreseeable future. Hopefully with the money saved by selling off the other lines, track improvements will bring the line back to it's former glory with trains moving along at 30mph.
