The head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, has issued a stark warning about the current global energy crisis, describing it as more severe than the 1970s oil shocks or the post-Ukraine war gas shortages. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on key energy infrastructure have reduced oil supply by 11 million barrels per day—double the combined losses of the 1970s crises. LNG supply has dropped by 140 billion cubic meters, and over 40 critical energy facilities across nine countries have been severely affected.

Birol stressed that urgent measures, including reopening the Hormuz Strait, reducing energy consumption, remote working, carpooling, and lowering highway speed limits, are needed to stabilize the global energy market.
