Kinabatangan is one of the most well-known best places to spot wildlife in Southeast Asia (dubbed the Amazon of Asia!) but did you know that it was almost completely destroyed? 🫨

30 years ago, the area around the river was being deforested and converted into palm oil plantations. Because the wildlife had nowhere to go, they were only left with a small strip along the river to wander.

As travellers soon discovered that it was one of the best places in Asia to spot wildlife, it became a major tourist hotspot (yay tourism dollars! 🤑) The government then recognised that it was profitable to conserve the remaining area rather than continue logging it.

Tourism can be a shield for incredible places like this, reminding us of the incredible impact we have as travellers, and how just by choosing to go there, can help protect them.
