The Old Rugged Cross (1926)

The Perkins House in Colfax, WA has a large number of historical items. Including phonograph records, many more than a hundred years old and containing songs seldom if ever heard today. Most of these are made of shellac, not vinyl. We in the Perkins House are honored to share our collection with you.

The Criterion Quartet was an American vocal group, established circa early 1900's. The membership was fluid and they recorded under various names for different record labels, including calling themselves the Strand Quartet and the Roxy Quartet. The group broke up sometime in the 1930’s.

Formed by the merger of three companies, Brunswick-Balke-Collender was the largest producer of billiard and saloon equipment and furniture in the world in the late 1890’s to early 1900’s. In 1913 the Chicago based firm started manufacturing phonograph cabinets, and soon created their own phonograph brand and records. By 1923 it was the third largest record producer in the US, and was issuing new records daily. The Great Depression forced the company to sell its record division to Warner Brother Pictures, which eventually sold the Brunswick label to the American Record Corporation.
