WHAT MAKES A GOOD HOOK (beginning) AND ENDING?

Good beginnings and good endings speak to one another.

When endings reference the beginnings, it reminds us of how much growth we have seen in you (the writer) over the course of the essay.

As someone who got into every college I applied for, and coached over 200+ students on their college journeys, I really coach my students to use the FULL CIRCLE method:

think of ways that you can remind your reader how far you’ve come in your ending. don’t give me a boring “in conclusion” sentence. instead, let’s say you started your essay with sensory details. perhaps return us through your five senses back to that moment.

or maybe you started the essay with an anecdote about you as a kid. maybe you’re reflecting on who that kid is from your current point of view.

think about PARALLELS. in my comm app essay that got me into every ivy league and went viral around the globe, I parallel the sentence structure from my opening paragraph in my ending. What does this accomplish? It shows that I am now HAPPY with the chaos that language creates in my house. My ending SUBVERTS expectations thus making it memorable; more importantly, it demonstrates my growth over the course of the essay.
