Ingredients
1 can of Garbanzo Beans
1 tsp of masala
1/2 cup of water
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1 tsp of Salt
1 tsp of turmeric
1 tsp of red chili powder
3 tbsp oil
1 tsp of cumin
1/2 large yellow onion diced into medium pieces
1 inch cube of ginger (diced into small pieces)
2 garlic gloves (minced into small pieces)
10-15 cilantro leaves (diced)
Method
1. Start by creating the thurka which is our base to most North Indian Punjabi dishes. In medium sauce pan on medium heat add about 3 table spoons of oil.
2. Let it get hot and add 1 tsp of cumin and stir 1 min
3. Add 1 inch cube of finely ground ginger & 2 gloves of diced garlic stir for 2 min.
4. ½ of large onion diced to the thurka, cook these until they are translucent stirring frequently.
5. Add 1 small puréed tomato and let that cook down for about 1.5 minutes.
6. Add ½ cup of tomato sauce to the thurka.
7. While this is cooking go ahead and add all your 1 tsp haldi/turmeric 1 tsp of red chili and I added ¾ tsp of salt. I left a ¼ tsp of salt out because I have an habit of over salting. So if I needed more salt I could just add it at the end. Give that a good stir and this a good time to taste your thurka. And if its missing salt/spiciness you can add it now.
8. After you have cooked this down for about 1-2 minuets go ahead and add ½ cup of hot water.
9. If you are using canned garbanzo beans drain rinse and add to your thurka. Coat all the garbanzo beans in the tharie/ sauce. Cover with lid on low and heat for about 15 mins.
I added the cilantro to early and it wilted. So my recommendation is add the cilantro closer to searving on top.
Enjoy!
