Mazda CX-60 2023 - First Proper Luxury Car from Mazda
Mazda is kicking off an SUV onslaught with the all new CX-60. Although it looks familiar, this is an all-new model underneath the skin, featuring rear-wheel-drive underpinnings known as the Skyactiv Multi Solution Scalable Architecture. This model is the firm’s first ever plug-in hybrid model and comes with the i-Activ AWD setup primarily driving the rear wheels. The PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) version will be the first to hit the market in 2023, by combining a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter gas engine with an electric motor. Mazda states that the combustion engine will supply 189 hp and the electric motor comes in at 134 hp. Combined, the e-Skyactiv pumps out a respectable 323 hp.
The Mazda CX-60 is a part of their newly established ‘Large Product Group’ and will accelerate to 62mph in 5.8 seconds. It’ll be electronically capped at 124 mph when utilized as a PHEV and to 87 mph with the ICE turned off. Speaking of zero emissions, the lithium-ion battery pack holds enough power to supply a range of up to 39 miles, Mazda claims.
So Just How Much Bigger And Heavier Is The CX-60 Compared With Other Mazda's?
As far as size is concerned, the Mazda CX-60 is 186.8 inches long, 74.4 inches wide and 65.7 inches tall. That makes it a little bigger in every direction compared to the recently launched FWD-CX-50 available only in North America. As Mazda have with recent all-new model launches, they explain the company has gone to great lengths to enhance the CX-60’s comfort, refinement, and dynamic abilities through a range of methods. Mazda has fine-tuned elements such as the body structure, seats, suspension, steering and sound insulation to ensure an engaging and luxurious drive experience. As weight is always a concern when talking about PHEVs, it’s worth highlighting that the Mazda CX-60 tips the scales at 4,530 lbs with the 20-inch wheels or a slightly lower with the base 18-inch alloys.
The Mazda CX-60: Design
Finished with a stylish all new Rhodium White Premium Metallic paint, the CX-60 has a long bonnet to accommodate longitudinally mounted engines. The powertrain works with a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission with a multi-plate clutch replacing the hydraulic torque converter. In the case of the PHEV, the electric motor is built into the transmission and works directly on the input shaft for a quicker response. Once you’re out of battery, it can be recharged at 7.2 kW, but Mazda isn’t saying how long it takes. Regenerative braking is well-supported. The CX-60’s driving modes include normal, sport, off-road, towing and EV Modes. Hill Descent control adds further convenience. Mazda has emphasized that the new CX-60 eliminates the van-like look found on many of its competitors by using the typical features of the framed Mazda style, such as its tall hood and spectacular grille accented by chrome that encircles the main lights. The chrome trim and air intake designs give the CX-60 its distinctive flair. Furthermore, its rear profile is not overly vertical, transforming it, nearly, into a coupe.
The Mazda CX-60: Interior
The interior is quite posh to say the least, sending a bit of Volvo vibe to reiterate Mazda’s intentions of becoming a fully-fledged luxury brand. Step inside the new CX-60’s cabin, and you are instantly engulfed in a warm and cozy atmosphere. The baseboard’s bamboo-colored plastics are interlaced with a cloth with seams that resemble jinbei, the traditional Japanese worker’s garment. With fabric, wood, leather and ambient lighting, the overall effect is soothing to say the least. The industry’s trend towards using fewer buttons is noticeable here but without going overboard as you still have a row of physical controls. Moving onto the tech, the instrument panel is all-digital, with an LCD screen supported by a head-up display with a larger projection area than seen on previous Mazda models. The wide center touch screen is not the biggest one out there, but on the plus side, you’ve got physical climate controls.
