When Germany invaded, Dutch forces were quickly overwhelmed. One of the main defensive positions was the Battle of the Grebbeberg, where my grandfather was stationed as a young soldier of barely 20 years old.

He was wounded by a granate and taken prisoner by the Germans. He was transported to Germany and spent six weeks in a prisoner-of-war camp.

When he returned, he weighed only 45 kg. But he came back holding his head high. They had broken his body, but not his spirit.

He went on to marry my grandmother and start a family.

But he never spoke about the war ever again. The only thing he ever really said about it was that the German soldiers came at them “like a machine.” They were unstoppable.

That image stayed with me.
