Is Aleksej Pokusevski The BIGGEST STEAL Of The 2020 NBA Draft?

Serbia’s Aleksej Pokusevski is the closest thing to a unicorn the 2020 NBA draft has to offer. There’s probably no other prospect in the draft who is more intriguing, more mysterious and more divisive amongst NBA teams than him. In today’s video, I make sense of all the buzz surrounding the Serbian sensation. I’m breaking down his game, where he could get drafted and what teams are the best fit for him.

There’s a lot to know about Aleksej Pokusevski. He was born in Serbia and is the youngest player in the 2020 draft, not turning 19 until late December. As for his physical profile, The first thing you notice about him is how tall and thin he is. Poku stands seven feet tall with a wingspan of 7’3 and a standing reach of 9’1". Poku only weighs about 205 pounds though. Remember, he’s only 18 so you’re banking on his frame filling out in three or four years, but some teams might find it a little concerning considering some NBA point guards weight more than that.

In terms of Poku’s stats, he only played 12 games this past season due to a knee injury for a second tier Greek team. — He averaged 9.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.7 blocks. All in all, really filled up the stat sheet. And it was only in about 20 minutes per game. He also shot 40% from the field on almost 9 attempts. Half of those attempts were from 3, in which he shot 32%. He was also solid from the free throw line at almost 80% on two attempts per game.

What stands out to me from all that is Poku’s large volume of three-point shooting. This will automatically turn heads given his size and the desire from teams to see shooting from a 7 footer. Any team that drafts Poku will be on a mission to turn him into a sharp-shooting stretch big.

Luckily, Pokusevski is not shy when it comes to launching from the outside … not in the least. He’s not super-efficient on those shots right now but you’d perhaps take the gamble that as he develops, he can be. Being able to shoot over most players is a nice advantage to have and there’s something to be said for it.

Pokusevski does have some good foot-speed given his size and he can do some work off of the dribble. If that becomes a part of his game, hey, all the better. But, again, the obvious area to invest in is shooting, over everything else.

From a playmaking point of view, Pokusevski possesses a lovely touch, and his vision and IQ are at a high level already. For whoever ends up selecting him, I think it’s worth tapping into that aspect of his game and looking to develop that further.

Defensively, Pokusevski obviously possesses size and length to cause disruption, as well as lateral quickness. The shot blocking potential is clear for everyone to see, both in a one-on-one scenario and as a help defender. Remember he averaged almost two a game this season.

Pokusevski’s lateral quickness means he was able to guard multiple positions, ball-handlers included. Whether that’s something that stacks up long term against tougher opposition will be important to monitor an extra positive to his game.

In terms of where Aleksej Pokusevski could be drafted I think the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks would all be excellent landing spots.
