An earthquake magnitude 7.8 struck southern Philippines early Monday, centered about 13 km southwest of General Santos in Mindanao, at a depth of 10 km. The quake damaged infrastructure in the coastal city, knocked out power and triggered a tsunami warning along parts of the Philippines, with waves up to 3 meters possible; Indonesia and Malaysia could see up to 1 meter. Authorities urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate to higher ground or move inland. There were no immediate casualty reports, though a small four-story building in General Santos partially collapsed and some people might be trapped; details were unclear. Aftershocks reached up to magnitude 6.5. The initial USGS depth was 55 km. Tremors were felt across parts of Indonesia, and coastal areas in North Sulawesi and North Maluku logged waves up to 18 cm. Officials cautioned aftershocks; PTWC said Hawaii was not threatened. There were no confirmed casualties.
