Newborns are Loud Sleepers #babycare #newmom
Your baby is loud at night — grunting, squirming, squeaking, even crying out — and it can feel impossible not to jump in immediately. But here’s the reassuring truth: noise does not always mean your baby is awake.
Newborns spend a huge amount of sleep time in active sleep (often called REM sleep). During these cycles, their brains are incredibly busy building connections, practicing breathing, coordinating muscles, and laying the foundation for learning and regulation. Their bodies move. Their faces scrunch. They vocalize. All while still asleep.
If we pause for a moment before intervening, many babies will settle themselves right back into deeper sleep. That short pause gives their nervous system space to practice self-regulation — a skill that develops because we allow it to. Rushing in too quickly can actually wake a baby who was never fully awake in the first place.
Of course, if your baby is escalating, distressed, or clearly awake, you respond. But if the sounds are brief, rhythmic, or stop on their own, it’s often just a normal sleep cycle doing its thing.
Babies don’t sleep quietly like adults. Their brains are growing at lightning speed — and growth is noisy. Sometimes the most supportive thing we can do is pause, watch, breathe… and trust their developing brain to do what it was designed to do.
Thank you @mommas_gang for the reminder that “sleep when the baby sleeps” is not always possible. But maybe these tips might help!
