DRUM MIC TIPS 3 TO 1 RULE FOR OVERHEADS & ROOM MICS
Howdy Y'all. Many viewers have requested videos on tips for drum mic placement so I have put together a handful of drum mic tips for home recording based upon the concept of having only 8 channels to work with as many commercial audio interfaces have only 8 mic preamps (at least the ones I can afford LOL!). Headphone listening is recommended. In this video we discuss using a variation of the 3 to 1 rule for aligning the phase your overheads, as well as why, and where to place a room mic to keep it in phase as well. This method is incredibly helpful in obtaining a great snare drum sound in a small space that is easy to place in your mix, without competing for space with the vocal. According to Sweetwater Music, "3:1 Rule of Microphone Placement. When using two microphones to record a source, normally you will get the best results by placing the second mic no closer than three times the distance from the first mic that the first mic is from the source. This is known as the '3:1 Rule of Microphone Placement'." Here the OH's are 3 ft from the snare, and the Room mic is 3 x 3 = 9 ft away from the snare. It's also roughly 9 ft from the OH placement creating a well phased image of the whole kit that makes placing the close mics in the mix a bit easier as you just fade em in. No longer are the snare sound, and tom sounds determined completely by the close mics. When using only 1 room mic, I've found 9ft to be a great place to match phase, a great placement for adding depth to the kit sound, and functional for recording in small spaces. This video features the Heil Drum Mic Collection. For the price these are incredible mics for recording drums. The PR30B's are amazing OH mics, The PR28 we literally put up, and started recording. Same with the PR22, on the snare, and the PR31 BW on the floor tom although those mics we fine tuned the angle a bit more to find the perfect sound. The 28 was literally plug, and play for an AMAZING TOM SOUND. Y'all already know I love my PR48 on the kick, and it performed incredibly well as the only kick mic.
