Driving in France // 10 Tips for Renting a Car

These are the 10 things I wish I'd known before renting a car in France.
Overall, it was a great experience, which I highly recommend!

1. Reserve an automatic transmission.
2. Don't rent from Paris. Go to a smaller city's train station.
3. Red lights are longer than they are in the USA.
4. Gas stations in some parts of France can be hard to find, so fill up frequently.
5. Signage is easy to understand, even if you don't speak French.
6. You'll encounter dozens of roundabouts (traffic circles).
7. The toll booths are easy to navigate
8. The bridges can be really tall in Northern France!
9. Watch for photo radar traps.
10. Don't be intimidated! I don't love driving, and renting a car in a foreign country can be intimidating, but a road trip lends itself to discoveries and adventures you don't always have access to through trains and buses.

In this video, I explain how easy it was to rent a car in Normandy, France, for a road trip that took us from the city of Caen, to Mont Saint-Michel, to the beaches of Normandy, to Honfleur, to Etretat.
