The Plaza Tree Lighting Ceremony, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Every year, on the Friday after Thanksgiving, The City of Santa Fe turns the Santa Fe Plaza into a dazzling winter wonderland of lights and merriment. People come from miles around to enjoy music and song, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and the lighting of the tree, at this annual tradition ushering in the holiday season in true New Mexican style. The annual Holiday Tree Lighting on the Plaza ceremony takes place this year on Friday, November 29, 2024.

You would be hard pressed to find another place as special as the historic Santa Fe Plaza during the holidays, when thousands of fairy bulbs light up the night. The park’s evergreens are draped in the multi-colored lights, while traditional farolitos line every sidewalk, building and roadway in the area. Live entertainment abd performances begin at 4:30 pm and continue until 8:00 pm. Santa and Mrs. Claus usually roll in on a vintage fire truck at 5:15 p.m., and Mayor Webber flips the mega light switch at about 6:15 p.m. Hot chocolate and cookies are traditionally provided by the local Girl Scout troupe, and food trucks are also available.
