Why Autistic Students Repeat Your Words - Tuesdays for Teachers Episode 79 #AutismAcceptanceMonth
✨ Tuesdays for Teachers ✨
Have you ever wondered why your autistic student keeps repeating what you say?
👉 It might be echolalia - a common feature in autism
It can happen right after they hear a word or a phrase (immediate echolalia) … or even after minutes, hours, or days (delayed echolalia).
👉 Echolalia serves a purpose - it is:
• A form of communication
• A way to process information
• A tool for self-regulation (focus, comfort, even joy… or distress)
So what can we do as teachers?
🔸️ Don’t rush to stop it
🔸️ Be mindful of the language you model
🔸️ Reduce too many questions or instructions at once
🔸️ Use clear, functional, purposeful language
⚠️ A common mistake we make is we keep asking lots of questions to “get a response”.
Instead…
👉 Avoid yes/no questions
👉 Use open-ended prompts to support functional language
