BMW 116D 118D 120D 125D Full Service Oil & Filter, Fuel, Air Cabin Filters Service Light Reset F20
Complete service start to finish including Service Indicator reset.
This should apply to all BMW 1 Series F20/F21 118D and 120D from 2011-2019, the 116D from 2011-2015 and the 125D from 2012-2015. This is the 2 litre N47 four cylinder diesel block.
Model years: 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
You will need:
Bojo Tip 52
17mm Socket
27mm Socket
8mm Socket
13mm Socket
10mm Socket
Oil capacity is 5.2 litres.
Sump plug torque is 25Nm.
Oil filter housing torque is 25Nm.
Oil and Filter:
Underneath the car there is a small flap covering the sump plug. This can be opened using a blunt tool such as Bojo Tip 52.
The sump plug is 17mm, remove, collect oil and replace the sump plug washer.
While you're waiting for the oil to drain fully assuming your car isn't on a lift you can change the oil filter. The oil filter is under the engine cover which can be removed by lifting it off the 2 lugs at the front and pulling towards you. The housing is a 27mm socket. Remove and replace the o ring and filter. Note when refitting the filter has a protrusion that locates into a hole. Oil filter housing is 25Nm.
Refit the sump plug and tighten to 25Nm.
The oil capacity is 5.2 litres. Add just under 5 litres and check the oil level either by running the car until warm and using the iDrive system or using the dipstick in the engine bay. Don't forget to refit the oil filler cap if running the car. Add oil until the capacity is maximum. If you run the car wait 5 or ten mins to use the dipstick and if you're using the iDrive make sure you don't overfill as after checking once it doesn't seem to be update.
Fuel Filter:
Underneath the car just above the rearward most under tray is the fuel filter.
Remove all the 8mm screws holding the tray in place and 1 10mm at the rear.
The tray requires to be turned to remove as seen in the video.
With access to the filter remove the 13mm holding the bracket in place.
The hose at the front is held in by 2 green clips. At this point try to drain the filter and keep a container at this end as when you disconnect the other end it will empty completely whilst pointing down.
The rear of the filter has a large clip that remove and allows the filter to detach.
When you remove the filter note there may be a thin rubber seal you can transfer to the new filter as it doesn't seem to come with a new one.
Also transfer the rubber ring for the mounting bracket.
When fitting the new filter check the orientation as the rear side has a locating groove.
When restarting the car you can switch the ignition on and off a few times before starting to try to fill the new filter however I didn't and it started within a few seconds and didn't cut out at all. Some cars do take a long time to refill the filter and restart but perhaps not these.
Air filter:
The air box is at the front of the engine and is held shut with 4 retaining clips that can be undone using Bojo Tip 1.
The top will then need to be pulled off the mounts to allow room to remove the filter from the left hand side.
Vacuum out any debris from the airbag if possible and fit the new filter. Check the filter is located well and doesn't get trapped in the edge of the air box.
Cabin filter:
The cabin filter location is the passenger side footwell on right hand drive models.
The kick panel is held on with 2 10mm bolts and then 3 locating clips.
The filter cover is held on with 3 T15 Torx screws.
When removing the old filter look for the direction arrows and match these when fitting the new filter.
