Tidal bore on the River Wampool 28th April 2021
A lesser known river, the Wampool flows through north western Cumbria and empties into Moricambe Bay (do not confuse with Morecambe Bay) which sits on the south bank of the Solway Firth. A bore occurs on the river at high spring tides given the right conditions.
I filmed from just east of the single track bridge over the river between Whitrigg and Kirkbride. There is a small parking area by the bridge on the Whitrigg side and a public footpath that runs by the river. Access to the river going towards Anthorn is fenced off. The river widens at the filming location and is relatively shallow, giving a better chance of a bore forming on this stretch.
The bore was very fast moving and the river rose at a fast rate. The river narrowed upstream from the filming location and the bore became undular; I’m not sure how much further it would travel given good conditions. There had been no rain for a couple of weeks, apart from a few hours the night before I visited. A brisk north east wind made for cold conditions.
Expected high tide at Silloth: 9.7m at 13:19 (BST)
The bore passed under the bridge at 12:57 (BST)
