The WTO and the global trading system - CSFI

The WTO (World Trade Organization) and the global trading system, with Adam Posen (Peterson Institute), Sir Vince Cable, Stuart Harbinson, Peter Ungphakorn and David Tinline

Why you should watch:

The multilateral trading system is under threat. The US hasn't been pulling its weight - and seems disinclined to support the WTO. China and India pose a new challenge - particularly when it comes to state-owned enterprises, subsidies, national security exemptions, IP, and many other issues. And, of course, there are those who felt globalisation was going into reverse even before Covid19 struck. Now, we have the pretty open competition for a new DG, with the UK Government having nominated the former Trade Minister, Liam Fox. He joins seven others, with the winner to be selected by early November. An exceptionally distinguished panel of trade experts discusses the issues.

Moderator: Andrew Hilton (Director, CSFI)

Adam Posen is President of the Peterson Institute in DC. He is a former external member of the BofE's MPC, who had a crucial influence in the discussions preceding the Bank's move towards QE. He has a PhD from Harvard, and is considered one of America's foremost economists.

Sir Vince Cable is a former leader of the Liberal Democrats and a former Secretary of State for BIS (and President of the Board of Trade). He is also a former chief economist at Shell, and has a PhD from Glasgow.

Stuart Harbinson is a former chief of staff to two DGs at the WTO - Supachai and Pascal Lamy. He also represented Hong Kong (and the SAR of Hong Kong) at the WTO, and chaired a number of WTO bodies - including TRIPs, services and disputes settlement.

Peter Ungphakhorn runs a trade blog, the 'Beta Blog'. He was formerly information officer at the WTO and is an occasional consultant for AgribusinessIntelligence.

David Tinline is a former senior adviser to WTO DG Roberto Azevedo, and a member of his cabinet. He was formerly chief speechwriter at HSBC.
