Conjunctions: correlative conjunctions in English || Parts of speech ||

Hey, learners!

In this lesson, we will master correlative conjunctions.

What is a correlative conjunction?

Correlative conjunctions are words that work in pairs to join two equal elements - words, phrases, or clauses.

Take out from the definition:

1. They work in pairs to join two words, phrases, or clauses.

2. It adds two equal grammatical elements:

• A noun with a noun
• A pronoun with a noun
• An adjective with an adjective
Either.. or
Neither... nor
Not only... but also
Both... and
Whether.. or
Such.. that
No sooner... than
Rather... than
1. Either.... or

It is used to join two words, phrases, or clauses. It means "one out of the two options".

• You either follow your passion or keep thinking about what others think about you.
2. Neither... nor

It means "none of the two options".
• Neither my teachers nor my friends believed in me.

• Jim is neither a good friend nor a good human being.
3. Not only... but also

It is used to put emphasis on the elements.
• He not only called me but also offered me a good job.

• Not only did she marry me but also she took care of my family.
4. Both... and

Focuses on the inclusion!
• Both my friends and my family support me with I do

5. Whether.. or

• I didn't know whether she'd take a cab or walk to her place.
6. Such.. that

( It is used to give reasons. )

• It was such a stupid question that I chose not to answer it.
7. No sooner... than

( It is used to show that the second item (action) happens just after the first one. )

• No sooner had I put on my clothes than it started raining heavily.

• No sooner had people clapping for me, than my confidence took off.
8. Rather.. than

( It is used as a conjunction to show a preference for an item to another. )

• She would rather have coffee than tea.
Important points

1. Use a parallel structure to add elements.

• He either likes to play cricket or working out in a gym.

• He either likes to play cricket or work out in a gym.
2. The subject-verb agreement: the verb must agree with the right subject or item.
With EITHER.. OR and NEITHER..NOR, we verb agrees with the second item: what comes after OR and NOR.

• Either my parents or I am right.

• Either my parents or I are right. ❌
• Neither the employees nor the employer is happy with my work.

• Neither the employees nor the employer are happy with my work. ❌
3. We don't use a comma to join the pairs of a correlative conjunction.

Not only did he slap me, in front of thousands, but also he took my money.
