Agnus Dei | SOPRANO 1 Practice Track | John Rutter
After the dancing radiance of the Sanctus, the Agnus Dei brings the Requiem back to earth — a hushed, minor-key prayer built on a single, aching melodic line that passes from voice to voice like a whispered petition. This SATB practice track locks in every entrance of that quiet, imitative texture so your section can carry its weight with confidence through the movement's short but emotionally exposed arc.

ABOUT THE PIECE
"Agnus Dei" is the fifth movement of John Rutter's Requiem, completed in 1985 and dedicated to the memory of his father. Setting the Latin text "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest," it is the shortest movement in the work — barely three minutes — yet carries the Requiem's deepest emotional weight. Scored for SATB chorus with piano, the movement unfolds as a dark, imitative lament, each voice entering with the same falling melodic fragment before the texture thickens into a brief, intense climax and recedes into silence. The Requiem was first performed in full at Lovers' Lane United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas, on October 13, 1985, and published by Oxford University Press the following year.
ABOUT THE COMPOSER
John Rutter (b. 1945) is among the most widely performed living choral composers. Educated at Clare College, Cambridge, he founded the Cambridge Singers and built a catalogue spanning carols, anthems, and extended sacred works. His Requiem — blending Latin liturgy with English biblical texts — is his most ambitious composition, alongside works like "Gloria," "Magnificat," and "The Lord Is My Shepherd." Rutter's music is published principally by Oxford University Press.
TEXT AND MEANING
The text is the Agnus Dei from the Ordinary of the Mass: "Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem" — "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest." In the Requiem Mass, "dona eis requiem" replaces the usual "miserere nobis," shifting the plea from mercy for the living to rest for the dead. Rutter's setting honours that shift with a texture that feels private, almost vulnerable — each section enters alone before the choir unites for a single, swelling cry, then falls back into stillness. For the singer, the demands are control and unanimity: matching tone and vowel across staggered entrances, sustaining the long crescendo without forcing, and landing the final cadence with absolute quiet.
