The team return to the Panoptichron, where the Sovereign inform them that their pursuit of Proteus is damaging further realities, while the already damaged universes come close to collapse. But that has to wait as Proteus is detected in the Squadron Supreme universe, where that team's homebase of Utopia Island is under attack by the forces of Master Menace. They put up a good fight, but even Hyperion is injured by their weapons. But as the forces close in on Nighthawk, Proteus suddenly appears in front of him, fighting off the soldiers and seeming to help the heroes. They force a retreat, and in the aftermath, Proteus lies to the squadron, confirming this is one of the Hyperions Beak summoned to take down the evil Hyperion, and telling them he was sent to warn of the Exiles treachery. The Exiles show up just then, where the two teams duke it out, and in the confusion, Proteus teleports to a new reality. The heroes continue to fight, but the Exiles are eventually subdued. The squadron puts them on trial, where they insist they're innocent, but Hyperion isn't inclined to believe them. He testifies that he was brought on to defeat the evil Hyperion and was tempted to destroy the base, but saw strength in Beak's character, who is no longer present. Morph is called to testify, where he explains they were coerced into their mission to begin with, also admitting not everything they did has a positive impact. Sabretooth can no longer control himself and springs at the squadron, Nighthawk declaring them guilty. But just then, Heather uses the Timebroker projection to appear as their legal counsel, revealing that the squadron are guilty of far worse than the Exiles. They brainwashed their villains to turn them good and killed the original Nighthawk, among other things that led to the Global Directorate that hunts them to this day. Meanwhile, the Exiles have saved dozens of universes then left them alone, refusing to get involved any further. The squadron are humbled by this revelation, and, when Heather reveals the directorate had been rigging their elections, they broadcast that information to the world and arrest them. However, they still don't trust the Exiles with their power, so they send Zarda to monitor them and make sure Proteus is dealt with.
