Jonny Kim was an 18D Medic and Assistant Lead Sniper, Navigator and Pointman of Task Unit BRUISER CHARLIE Platoon in Ramadi, 2006 talks with Jocko Willink, his former task unit commander on dealing with their fear of certainly losing their teammates.

And, they share their thoughts of the day where they did lose their teammates - August 2nd, 2006.

For their actions that day, Jonny Kim received the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" for tending to Ryan's wound under the threat of sniper fire and helping him down the stairway, grabbing Job's arm over his shoulder and having him lean on him heavily, then reach the vehicle to get him to medical care, saving his life.

Marc Lee received the Silver Star Medal for stepping directly in the line of enemy fire three times to engage the enemy, the first and second time doing so directly in the spot where Ryan Job was shot in the face, and the third time being KIA to protect his teammates behind him.

Leif Babin received the Silver Star Medal for being in the direct line of enemy fire, remaining by Ryan's side to get him to safety, after calling casualty evacuation and fire support. In a firefight 2 hours later, Marc Lee was killed and Leif Babin took a round to the leg after crashing into another SEAL, Jason Hogan, possibly saving his life. He continued to direct clearance of the target building, securing it, and ensured the safe extraction of Marc Lee and the rest of his platoon.

Kevin Lacz received the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" for carrying Marc Lee's body through enemy gunfire to safety.

SEAL Team 3 Charlie Platoon accounted for over 200 confirmed kills in Ramadi, Iraq from April 2006 - October 2006, nearly all of them being sniper engagements, 101 of those kills being done by SOC Chris Kyle, the remaining snipers being Jonny Kim, Kevin Lacz, Sean Haggerty, Tony Eafrati and at least one other SEAL.

You can read more about what happened that day in the books "American Sniper," "The Last Punisher" and "A Warrior's Faith."(Ryan Job's account, according to a close friend of his)

After experiencing those losses and seeing physicians care for their brothers in arms, Jonny wanted to be a physician. He graduated USD with a 3.98 Math Degree, volunteered at a Naval Hospital, then became a Pat Tillman Scholar. He graduated from Harvard Medical School, with one of his professors citing that "he performed wonderfully [there]." According to SEAL Teammate JP Dinnell on Breaking Ranks Podcast, he graduated at the "absolute top" of his class at Harvard Medical School. He applied and was accepted to the NASA Astronaut Program. He graduated in January 2020, and works with 17 other Astronauts on the Artemis Missions to go to the Moon and Mars.
