Archaeologist vs. Indiana Jones | PhD Candidate Danielle K. Heinz | Silly Questions, Smart Bruins
Graduate students share their expertise through a whimsical lens in the UCLA College video series called “Silly Questions, Smart Bruins.” The newest episode takes viewers on an archaeological journey, drawing inspiration from the film “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” — the final installment in the beloved franchise — on the eve of its June 30 premiere.
Danielle Kalani Heinz, who earned a master’s degree in archaeology at UCLA in 2018, is now a UCLA doctoral candidate in Hawaiian archaeology. With a focus on making her field of study more equitable, she offers insights on what Indy’s adventures might have looked like in the Aloha State. (Hint: there are no snake pits to fall into, but if you’re ambushed by a rogue mongoose, run for it!)
In this episode of “Silly Questions, Smart Bruins,” Heinz discusses what she treasures most about her ancestors’ native land, sheds light on the trusted tools of her trade and shares her perspective on what scientists can do to conduct equitable, community-centered research.
