What does it look like when a goddess weeps?

Benjamin West answered that question in 1768 with one of the most emotionally devastating paintings of the Neoclassical era — Venus Lamenting the Death of Adonis.

The story comes from Ovid's Metamorphoses, the great Roman collection of myths and transformations. Adonis was the most beautiful mortal who ever lived — so breathtaking in his beauty that even Aphrodite, goddess of love herself, fell completely and helplessly in love with him.

They were inseparable. But Adonis lived for the thrill of the hunt. And despite Venus's desperate warnings, he could not be kept from the forest.

One day, his dogs cornered a wild boar. Adonis rushed in for the kill. But the boar turned — and with one savage strike, it was Adonis who fell.

Venus heard his cry from across the sky. She descended and found him dying on the ground, his blood soaking the earth beneath him. She held him. She wept over him. And she could not save him.

In West's painting, that moment is captured in heartbreaking detail — the goddess of love, powerless for perhaps the first time, cradling the body of the man she adored. Around her, traditional symbols of Venus appear: a small Cupid, swans, the soft light of a world that does not yet know what has been lost.

West returned to this painting in 1819, adding final touches to a work that would eventually find its permanent home in the Carnegie Museum of Art.
