Description:
The Old Testament seems to portray God as vengeful and wrathful. While the New Testament depicts God as merciful, loving, and forgiving. Does the New Testament hold a different view of justice and violence than the Old Testament?

Old Testament God vs. New Testament God will be the topic of conversation taking place this week on the Straight Truth Podcast. Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot answer these questions biblically by going to the source of Truth itself. They appeal to the Bible, allowing God’s Word to speak definitively on this subject. Thus giving us a fuller view and understanding based on both testaments.

Dr. Caldwell says he thinks this statement and question reflects a lack of knowledge or interest in the Old Testament. We must not forget that the whole book is for us and belongs to us, from Genesis to Revelation. The idea that the God of the Old Testament is different from the God of the New Testament also reflects some lack of knowledge of the New Testament. Therefore, this is where Dr. Caldwell takes us as he opens the Word of God and walks us through a few Scriptures from both testaments.

He shares and gives commentary on these New Testament Scriptures:
John 3:36, Romans 1:18, Romans 2:5-8, Revelation 6:15-17

He then turns to the Old Testament and does the same with the following verses:
Numbers 14:18, Exodus 34:6, Ezekiel 18:23, Ezekiel 33:11

After sharing these passages and discussing them further, he tells us that the question, with much respect, is off at its very inception. The God of the Old Testament is the same God of the New Testament. In both testaments, He is a God of forgiveness, grace, mercy, and love, but also the God who will punish sin in the end. A God of justice.

Dr. Philpot says that maybe people think of Joshua and his conquest of Canaan when they ask this question. That conquest includes a whole lot of death that took place. That death included old men, young men, women, and children alike. However, what is often ignored is what is actually going on there. The conquest did not involve the entire population of the land. Only certain cities were to be dispossessed. Perhaps people are thinking of the time of Joshua when asking this question. But if so, there is something else that ought to be considered. The conquest that Joshua led brought death to thousands. Yet the book of Revelation indicates that many times more than this will lose their lives. So, it almost appears that the New Testament is even more violent than the Old Testament. Dr. Caldwell agrees.

Dr. Caldwell says he thinks the common theme here is that we have to read the Bible contextually. We have to take note of what’s going on, what the Lord is doing, even how He is making Himself known. We have to hear these things in their context, and it will help us to better understand.
