10 Craziest Ways Drug Dealers Smuggle Drugs
The United States is seriously cracking down on the drug trade. Not only are authorities doing overtime to keep these illegal drugs off the streets, they are also utilizing cutting edge technology to make sure that these drugs don’t even enter the country. With that said, the drug cartels are inventing more and more ingenious ways to smuggle their wares into the US, and it’s those methods that we will be talking about today.
From well made underground tunnels to just chucking over drugs over the border, here are the 10 craziest ways drug dealers smuggle drugs.
Number 10. Underground Tunnels
Remember the time when drug kingpin El Chapo escaped from a maximum security prison? It made quite the headlines at the time, because of the ingenious way of how he did it. He had his men dig an underground tunnel right up to underneath his cell, and it’s no ordinary dirt tunnel. It was paved with concrete, had lights and ventilation, and even had a modified motorcycle track. The entire thing was estimated to cost around $50 million.
This just proves that drug lords have engineers in their payroll, and they don’t only use their engineering skills to break their bosses out of prison. Believe it or not, there are around 70 tunnels just like El Chapo’s scattered along the US-Mexico border. These tunnels have been used to smuggle anything to the US which includes illegal immigrants and of course, illegal drugs.
The longest of which was found in 2020. It stretched for 4,309 feet, had an elevator, drainage and air ventilation systems, and high voltage electrical cables. The tunnel connected an industrial site from Tijuana to San Diego, California.
Number 9. Disposable Drug Submarines
Drug smugglers are getting craftier and craftier with the methods that they use, even if that meant building their own disposable submarines to further their smuggling operations.
Yes, you heard me right, these guys are already building their own submarines in order to smuggle drugs, some of which can cost up to a million dollars. The first of these was discovered by authorities in 1988 just off the coast of Boca Raton, Florida. It was 21 feet long and was remote piloted. The sub was already empty, meaning whatever was inside was already successfully smuggled into the US.
This method was extremely successful. In 2008 alone, the US Coast Guard spotted around 10 of these vessels per month, but captured only one of ten on average. And if one is captured, it doesn’t really matter to the drug lords. Yes, they did waste a cool million on a captured sub, but that’s a drop in the ocean compared to the hundreds of millions of dollars they get from the successful smuggling operations.
Number 8. Fake Produce
The US imports a lot of things into the country, and fresh produce being some of them. And of course, if someone is sending anything into the country, you can be sure that drug smugglers will try to get in with the action, and attempt to smuggle drugs along with these more legal imports.
In February 2014, authorities seized 4,000 cucumbers and plantains in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico; every single one of them stuffed with cocaine. In another case, a checkpoint in Arizona came across a shipment of marijuana that had been packaged in green plastic with yellow streaks, making them appear to look like watermelons.
Also, in 2016, police in Chicago were tipped off to the arrival of a tomato shipment with 54 kilos of cocaine in it — drugs with a street value of almost $7 million.
Number 7. Drug Filled Pastries
Yes, even the sweet, sweet pastries that we love didn’t escape the use of drug smugglers, and it totally makes sense to use them. Sprinkle some cocaine on those donuts instead of powdered sugar, board a plane and you’re good to go. That may sound like a joke but that is exactly what Mexican soldiers confiscated back in 2015.
In a separate incident in 2013, authorities in San Andrés Island in Colombia found almost a kilogram of cocaine hidden in 12 donuts. It was being smuggled out of the country by a tourist.
