Cowboy Bebop is packed with references to music and film. However, the 9th episode, “ Jamming With Edward,” features a rare example of a mean-spirited reference.

The news section at the start of the episode features Yuri Kellerman, a strange and freaky conspiracy theorist. This is clearly a dig at Uri Geller, a well-known Israeli-British illusionist, who, to quote Wikipedia:

“Is known for his trademark television performances of spoon-bending and other illusions. Geller uses conjuring tricks to simulate the effects of psychokinesis and telepathy.”

Famously, in 2000, Geller sued Nintendo, saying that the Pokémon Kadabra was based on him (due to it holding a spoon), Geller told the press: "Nintendo turned me into an evil, occult Pokémon character. Nintendo stole my identity by using my name and my signature image."

This lawsuit is why Kadabra was rarely seen in Pokémon media in the early 2000s
