History Fridays: Hanna Barbera #brokenpencilstudios #animation

Remember the Saturday morning cartoons? Your breakfast rendezvous with The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, or The Smurfs?

All that credit goes to the power duo, Hanna-Barbera! The most successful animation partnership in the world between former engineering student, William Hanna, and then bank accountant, Joseph Barbera.

The pair started at MGM Studios in the 1930s, where they created “Puss Gets the Boot”, in which a cat named Jasper tries to stop a mouse named Jinx from breaking things in the house. Sound familiar? It is. It’s the beginnings of Tom and Jerry! And the beginning of Hanna-Barbera.

In 1957, they left MGM and founded Hanna-Barbera Productions, where they soon aired The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Jonny Quest, Scooby Doo, and many more. Cartoons with imaginative, creative storytelling, and otherworldly gadgets! Do you remember the breakfast-in-a-ball, hairdressing helmet, clothes folding machine, walkable conveyor belts, and smartwatches? We own some of these today! Imagine the minds that had to create these fanciful inventions and have them exist now. This was the caliber of creativity that ran through the DNA of Hanna-Barbera.

From the half-century collaboration of Hanna and Barbera, grew a cast of characters who remain deeply rooted in the childhoods of so many adults, and these are worth passing along for generations and generations forward - until the gadgets in The Jetsons seem as far outdated as The Flintstones age, but timeless as ever can be.
