Learning GUJARATI, The OFFICIAL Language of the State of Gujarat | Ahmedabad, India

Whenever I visit a new place, one of my favorite things to do is to learn some common words and phrases in the local language, or at least attempt to do so! India is no different. With so many different languages and dialects that vary from state to state, there’s no shortage of languages to learn in this amazing country. In November of 2018, my travel buddy Sam from Samuel & Audrey took some time to learn the official language in each Indian city we visited and we had a blast doing it!

India has the second-highest number of languages in the world, with over 780 official languages and more than 1,600 once you include regional dialects. Only Papua New Guinea has more native languages. While taking a brief break from exploring and eating, Sam and I asked our awesome new friend Rutu to teach us some common words and phrases in Gujarati, the official language of the state of Gujarat and its largest city, Ahmedabad.

In addition to words and phrases, we also learned a bit about the Gujarati and Hindu calendars, and that each city in Gujarat has its own dialect. Sam and I also noticed that some Indian languages share words or have similar words for the same item.
