Meeting with Nestor Troncoso
For many years Nestor Troncoso has been working in Tamaulipas, one of the most dangerous states of Mexico. In 2019, after having delivered humanitarian aid to people living in secluded areas controlled by self-defense groups linked to drug cartels, he had become a victim of attempted homicide. The attack was broadcasted live by the attackers themselves as an intimidation tool for other journalists. Moreover, the threats to journalists´ life continue, and he is aware that the criminals have offered 500 thousand pesos (20 thousand euros) to those who deprive him of his life.
Currently, Nestor is in Barcelona, Spain, forming part of a short-term program dedicated to protecting Mexican journalists.
