Bitwig 2.0 - The Phaser (All Pass Filters, Phasing vs Flanging, and More)

https://www.sormena.org/ for more of my free courses.

In this video we go all in with the new Phaser device introduced in Bitwig Studio version 2.0. The first half of the video is dedicated to the process of phasing, how that differs from flanging, and the variations of All Pass Filters you'll find in Bitwig and with EQ plugins. We'll create a very basic 2 pole phaser using the EQ-5 and note the benefits of working with the multiband 2 and multiband 3 containers vs the custom multiband FX-Layer. You do not need to be a Bitwig user for this first part. It's information you can use and apply in any DAW.

In the second half of the video we focus on Bitwig's phaser, see what's unique about it, and use it in a few practical (and experimental) applications.

As an FYI I am not an engineer and really don't fully understand why phase shifts need to occur with analog and digital equalizers. At one time I remember reading something in a book that made a lot of sense to me but I totally forget it now. Anyone who can explain the necessity of this in layman's terms please do so in the comment section. I did find a couple of really interesting resources on the subject however. One that squashes the myth (that I believed to be true) that you can hear the phase shifts occurring when you use a lot of bands on equalizers.

In this video I showed a new freeware filter plugin by black rooster audio called the VHL-3C... it;s a very nice sounding set of "analog" low pass and hi pass filters similiar to what you get on the PTEQ-X. Aka passive filters that typically aren't modeled with Pultec emulations. You can download it here.

00:00 Introduction (What we’ll cover)

01:00 The All Pass Filter (Phaser Poles)

03:14 Phase Cancellation with EQ Filters

05:27 Multiband-2 and Multiband-3 No Phase Issues

06:38 Creating a basic 2 pole phaser with EQ

10:36 Vintage Passive Filters in All Pass configurations… no phase problems (Black Rooster Audio VHL-3C). My assumption is that the design/algorithm of the low pass and hi pass are different thus why we don't have any phase cancellation at the cross over point.

14:32 The Phaser Device (Bitwig Device)

20:13 Phaser vs Flanger (Phasing vs Flanging)

24:24 What makes the Bitwig Phaser Unique

27:43 Practical and Experimental Applications of the Phaser
