Sally Rooney Explains Why She Joined the BDS Movement

“Active participants in liberation.”

When Sally Rooney joined the boycott movement against apartheid Israel, she was inspired by Irish shopworkers who refused to sell fruit from South Africa in the 1980s.

“Theirs was the example I had in mind in 2021 when I made my own belated decision to join the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, and refuse to work with Israeli organisations complicit in apartheid,” she said.

Rooney was speaking at the People’s Congress for the Hague Group in Amsterdam, organised by Progressive International.
